Judicial Council Committee Awards Grants for Civil Legal Services
After a competitive application process, the Judicial Council of Georgia Standing Committee on Grants, successor to the Judicial Council Domestic Violence Committee, has awarded Domestic Violence grants totaling $2,910,002 to six nonprofit agencies, and a $727,515 Kinship Care grant to Atlanta Legal Aid Society, Inc. in collaboration with Georgia Legal Services Program, Inc. The Domestic Violence funds are used to provide direct civil legal assistance to low-income victims of domestic violence and their children. The Kinship Care funds are used to provide civil legal services to kinship caregivers and children living with caregivers to provide stable homes and care.
The Georgia General Assembly first appropriated funds to the Judicial Council of Georgia for its Legal Assistance to Families Victimized by Domestic Violence Project in 1999, and funding has continued each subsequent legislative session. This is the fourth year the Georgia General Assembly has appropriated funds to the Judicial Council for its Legal Assistance to Kinship Care Families Project.
